JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) seeks applicants for the position of Computer Support Technician 1. Under the supervision of the ECE Department Head, the successful candidate will provide IT support to departmental faculty, staff, and graduate students. This includes basic helpdesk support, configuring or building new computers for specific tasks, and network management. This position will also ensure the supervision and safety of instructional labs and provide basic technical support for faculty and graduate research labs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Handle computer image building, software license management, and the interfacing of hardware devices to computers in ECE instructional laboratories.
  • Maintain and support the computers and the associated network for the department, faculty, and research offices/labs.
  • Administer department website.
  • Ensure supervision and safety of the computer lab area and equipment.
  • Assist with senior design lab management.
  • Maintain technical lab supplies.
  • Coordinate with course instructors as required (equipment and component purchases, software installations).
  • Provide basic technical support to ECE faculty on lab setup /safety & equipment purchases.
  • Serve as ECE representative on safety committees.
  • Provide input for budgets (equipment repair/maintenance, laboratory consumables, and new equipment purchases).
  • Maintain master equipment and lab supply inventory list for undergraduate labs.
  • Repair and maintain electrical engineering undergraduate laboratory equipment.
  • Work with faculty to identify, evaluate, and obtain new technology to ensure that undergraduate labs are equipped with current technology found in the industry.
  • Work with the College’s Engineering Technical Services department to manage the ECE department and CoE technical challenges.
  • Meet with the CoE IT support group to understand standard procedures and resources available.
  • Performs related duties as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Associate's degree and four years of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience OR six years of related experience.
  2. The ability to work occasional weekends and outside the normal work schedule.
  3. Knowledge of Windows and MacOS.
  4. Knowledge of printer setup, file services, and remote software management.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of IT skills for desktops, laptops, servers, and networking.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience working in a higher education setting.
  2. Knowledge of Linux administration.
  3. Knowledge of WordPress.
  4. Familiarity with the routine maintenance and operation of basic electrical engineering laboratory equipment.
